Here are explanations on the types of lenses for presbyopia that are available.

There is a progressive lens type with no boundaries for general use, a progresive lens type for short and intermediate distances that are exclusively for indoor use, a progressive lens type for reading that are exclusively for deskwork and allow you to see the area in front of you broadly, single-vision types only for reading, and types for both short and far distances (bifocals) with boundaries and small windows.

Please see “As seen with spectacle lenses for presbyopia” to see what vision is like with them through images.

All lenses have advantages and disadvantages.

1.Progressive lens for general use

As you know, progressive lenses for both short and far distances are convenient in that they let you see everything from far distances to the area right in front of you. These lenses each have multiple focal points in succession and are designed to give the user good focus at any distance either far or near. These lenses take time getting accustomed to as they have different powers from top to bottom and are different from previous lenses in that their users must adapt to different lines of sight and different visual fields. Please note that there are distortions on the left and right sides of the bottom parts. This cannot be avoided as it is necessary in order to produce the different powers. There has been an increase types of custom-made type lenses for progressive lenses that can be precisely adjusted to meet your perception and position where your line of vision is transferred in order to reduce such discomfort.

2.Progressive lenses for short and intermediate distances

They are also called indoor progressive lenses. Vision for intermediate and short distances is widened because there are fewer changes in power than with progressive lenses for general use due to the lack of portions for viewing far distances. They can be used comfortably at home or office as the intermediate portion is used extensively. However, they cannot be used for driving or working outside because they are not designed for far distances. What?! There may be those who think that this is inconvenient, but please remember what work at home or office is like. Don’t you think that there are not many situations where you need to look far? Would you not rather be able to see the area around your desk more broadly or watch TV more comfortably with progressive lenses for general use? These are lenses that take care of this. You can enjoy comfort by using them together with progressive lenses for general use.

3.Progressive lens for reading

They are lenses exclusively designed for deskwork and also called deskwork progressives. They allow you to focus on your newspaper while it is completely spread out on the table. They offer broad perception from the documents in front of you to your computer monitor without having to move your face much and getting tired. They offer broader vision in the area in front of you than progressive lens types for general use and types for short and intermediate distances do, so they can be used comfortably in private situations not only like when using your computer, but such as when reading the newspaper, painting, playing musical instruments, and arranging flowers. They are exclusively for reading so they cannot be used for looking at distant scenery or watching television. Please use them the same way you use reading glasses.

4.Bifocal lenses

There are small windows for viewing the area in front of you at the lower parts of the lenses for far distances and are thus known as lenses for both short and far distances with borders. They are mostly used by those who find it difficult to get accustomed to distractions such as distortions and sways in progressive lenses. There are no distortions in the surrounding parts but the small windows slightly stand out and some may not like this unevenness on the surfaces. The focal points are for far distances and for reading so they are not appropriate for intermediate distances.

5.Single-vision lenses for reading

They are lenses for the area right in front of you and are the lenses that provide the widest perception for this area. They are what we generally call reading glasses.Power is adjusted for only a certain distance and vision is blurry for other distances, but it is convenient for activities such as reading books. These are the types that are available and a point to keep in mind when selecting lenses for presbyopia is determining the types that best fit the situation that you intend to use them in.In terms of frames and necessary power; please also decide on whether you need a thin type or custom-made ones to reduce discomfort. We understand that there are many things that you want to know if it is your first time selecting lenses for presbyopia.Good communication with the staff is important when you are at an eyewear shop. Please take the time to describe your concerns as well as your requests at your eyewear shop and decide on what you need while taking their advice.
