HomeTips and Information › Vol.4 About Absorption Lenses

This time, I would like to tell you about absorption lenses about which our “Customer Service team” frequently receives questions. I hope the information here will be helpful to those who have an interest in absorption lenses.

First of all, whenever we are asked about absorption lenses, we question why you are interested in absorption lenses and what is your current trouble because the product we can recommend and the information we must explain to you will depend on them.

Below are examples of typical inquiries among the inquiries we have received. we do not have enough space here to explain in detail, and we therefore focus on important points.

Case 1.
I suffer from retinitis pigmentosa (we also receive inquiries from patients with macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, or other eye diseases). The doctor of my eye clinic recommended lenses designed to cut off ultraviolet light and strongly stimulating blue light, which are hazardous to the eyes. Do you have lenses that have such an effect?

Case 2.
I am annoyed by strong glare when I go outside. Also indoors, I am bothered by light from fluorescent lamps and personal computers. I heard that absorption lenses are good for these symptoms. I want your advice.

The lenses the doctor of your eye clinic recommends are absorption lenses. These lenses can not only cut off almost all ultraviolet light but also effectively block “blue light,” which has the characteristic of dispersing in light with a short wavelength (approximately 380 to 500 nm) among light rays visible to the eyes (visible light rays), while allowing other types of light to pass through. Thus, you less feel darkness compared to sunglasses that cut off all types of light.

Since the degree of glare is different between outdoor and indoor places, we recommend using lenses of two colors, dark and light.

Absorption lenses are available in a wide variety of colors and types, including progressive types, types exclusively for indoor use, and thin types. Please note that you should not select a color based on its look but check the effect with color samples and select one you would feel easy and comfortable.

Case 3.
I do not suffer from any particular eye disease, but my eyes get strained from using the personal computer. This is troublesome because I have to work on the personal computer for long hours. Are absorption lenses effective in reducing eyestrain?

The point you should keep in mind is that you may misrecognize traffic lights when you wear lenses of a color that completely cuts off blue light, and you cannot use such lenses during driving even in the daytime.

Eyestrain is induced by various causes, such as staring at the computer display for long hours from a short distance, external light reflection or flicker on the screen, a change in the power of progressive lenses, and the impact of the narrow field of view. To an elderly person, for example, we recommend a wide vision type lens for near vision using an absorption color because it ensures a wide field of view and, at the same time, enables him/her to view the screen through the front face of the eyeglass lenses with “ease.”

Even those who do not suffer from any particular eye disease can use this type of light shielding lens in various situations as a high-function filter lens.

This time, we have introduced a few examples of inquiries about absorption lenses.
